HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED IN WYOMING AND WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT LIVING HERE?
We've lived in Wyoming for fourteen years now and I like the small town feel where everybody knows everybody. It's taken awhile for us to be part of that… we came from Colorado, I was born and raised in Colorado Springs. But I loved the idea of a small town, it's a great place to raise our kids. Our kids are now grown and out of the house – we look back and we go, Yeah, we made a good choice here. Cheyenne's been awesome.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ACTIVITY?
My favorite activities for the summer are definitely boating. Just a real big boater, I have some cool things up there at Glendo. We have just a couple large boats that keep us entertained during the summer. My wife works for the school so she's off, so we work hard for our summers. We do what we want when we want; we love our Glendo and we love our summers.
WHY DID YOU JOIN THE #1 PROPERTIES TEAM?
Well, I was at another company for ten years. My goal is always to get over $10 million production every year, and I was never able to do that there. After my first full year here at #1, I was able to exceed that goal and haven't looked back.
WHAT HAVE YOU FOUND TO BE MOST BENEFICIAL ABOUT BEING A MEMBER OF #1 PROPERTIES?
There's a lot of things… first thing is just the marketing. We're a powerhouse when it comes to putting out brochures, promoting, advertising, blasting the marketplace and telling consumers and potential buyers what's going on. Two, being the largest company in town, there's a lot of signage, a lot of things that are out there that just continue to remind people of the #1 Properties logo and it's just huge. I guess the third thing would be just all the people. Everybody seems to really be able to get along and have a good time and it's something that you look forward to coming to work every day, because of the people.
PLEASE TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR FAMILY.
My wife, Tonya, we've been married for 23 years, she's the love of my life, couldn't have picked a better one. And then we have two daughters: Taylor's 23, this summer she moved to Rapid City, South Dakota. And my youngest, Courtney, graduated from high school about a year ago, and in May she went to the Army National Guard and was gone all summer. She just got back a few weeks ago and ended up moving out, so she's on her own and my wife Tonya and I are just enjoying being empty-nesters. We're about two weeks into it and we love it!
WHAT IS A HOLIDAY TRADITION THAT YOU ENJOY?
For Thanksgiving I typically make roasted pumpkin seeds, that's kind of a big thing… I baste them for about a week in what I call Buck's Secret Sauce. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, and the reason is because the pressure's really off – Christmas just seems to be a little overrated, just working with the dynamics of families and all that. But during Thanksgiving I make a really mean turkey with the help of my wife, make like a pomegranate sauce and everybody just loves to have it, whether we have Thanksgiving at my house or we travel, everybody's always asking if I can make the turkey. It's kind of been something we've built over the last ten years, so it's kind of our own tradition, it's pretty cool.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SPORTS TEAM?
By far, my favorite sports team is the Denver Broncos. Always been a fan. I remember as a little kid, sitting in front of the TV (back then we only had one!) and my dad made these foam blocks and painted them orange and called them Bronco Bricks. Some bad play or something would happen and we'd throw the Bronco Bricks against the TV. That's just always been instilled and I continue to love them, even though they haven't done so well the last couple years.
ARE YOU A PART OF ANY ORGANIZATIONS?
In fact, I was just inducted into the President position of the Cheyenne Board of REALTORS®. Previous to that, I've been involved with Boy Scouts of America – I'm an Eagle Scout – and some church and civic organizations throughout, I try to be involved with whatever I can. And up at Glendo, we do this huge EMT/Ambulance Service thing that we all volunteer our time and we raise almost $30,000 every year for that program; near and dear.
WHAT IS ONE OF THE COOLEST THINGS YOU'VE EVER WON?
That's a tough one, I don't win many things. I won a trip from Colorado Springs to Denver on an Old Chicago/Samuel Adams thing… I was 21 years old, they took a bus and went up and met Sam Cook, the developer of Samuel Adams. That was kind of cool, long time ago, though!
DO YOU WATCH ANY CURRENT TV SERIES?
A TV series I enjoy is Survivor. I like the realness of it, you never know what's going to happen.
WHAT IS ONE THING ABOUT YOURSELF THAT PEOPLE MIGHT BE SURPRISED TO LEARN?
When I was in high school I dove for Casa Bonita. And I also have a webbed toe.
IF YOU COULD MEET FACE TO FACE WITH ONE PERSON (DEAD OR ALIVE), WHO WOULD IT BE?
That one person would be my father again. He's been gone about six years and I've struggled with that.
WHAT IS ONE OF YOUR FAVORITE QUOTES?
I love the Golden Rule. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. It means a lot… it's kind of cliché, but I wake up every day and I expect that from other people as long as I do what I'm supposed to do.
ONE PIECE OF ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WANTING TO GET INTO REAL ESTATE?
You have to treat it like a true business. You have to work hours and build that sphere of people. It's not a nine-to-five job.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT WORKING AT #1 PROPERTIES?
I'm proud. I'm proud to be a member of #1. It's a good company, we have a good name and reputation, and I just think that Kim and Larry and everybody else before me has done just a phenomenal job on that.
We bought our home using Buck Wilson as our realtor from out of state. He was incredibly honest and trustworthy. We placed our offer sight unseen and when we got here it was exactly what Buck represnted to us. Our loan process ran into multiple bumps in the road. Buck handled us very professionally and helped us get everything sorted out with both our loan company and the seller of the property. Highly recommend Buck Wilson. -KW
