Day Trips

Medicine Bow National Forest: Provides a variety of recreational opportunities and natural attractions, including the Vedauwoo Recreation Area and the Snowy Range Ski Area. Call the Forest Service for more information. (307) 745-2300

Snowy Range Ski Area: 35 miles west of Laramie, offers downhill and cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in the winter. Summer offers hiking and scenic drives. (307) 745-2300

Fort Laramie National Historic Site: Built in 1834 as a fur trading post. Later acquired by the military in 1849 and used as a military post from 1849-1890 to guard the wagons along the various trails that went through the area. Open year round. (307) 837-2221

Oregon Trail Ruts & Register Cliff Guernsey, WY: Ruts carved into sandstone by the passage of wagon trains heading west along the Oregon Trail are located just west of town. Register Cliff, another resting point along the Oregon Trail where travelers heading west stopped for the night and carved their names in the sandstone cliffs. Located near town. Curt Gowdy State Park: Located 26 miles west of Cheyenne and 27 miles east of Laramie along Highway 210. Excellent for camping, boating, hiking, and fishing. Contact park superintendent: (307) 632-7946

Vedauwoo Recreation Area: Known for spectacular granite rock formations, located in the Medicine Bow National Forest. Rock climbing, picnic areas, campgrounds. Call Medicine Bow National Forest for more information. (307) 745-2300

Wyoming Territorial Prison and Old West Park: Beautifully restored, the prison provides an authentic look at the history of law and justice in the West. Also contains the U.S. Marshals Museum and a Frontier Town. In Laramie. Call (307) 745-6161


Recreation

Recreational opportunities are abundant in and around Cheyenne. The Cheyenne Parks Department maintains 15 city parks, 14 baseball fields, 9 softball fields, 8 soccer fields, and 36 "greenbelt" areas encompassing over 1,400 acres of developed park land throughout the city as well as outdoor skating rinks, an indoor municipal pool, a skateboard park and 12 tennis courts throughout the city including indoor courts available in the winter.

Cheyenne Botanical Gardens provides many services to youth, seniors and the handicapped. It is also open to the public to provide a relaxing and educational park space.

There are five golf courses in Cheyenne: One 18-hole and one 9-hole municipal course, one 18-hole country club course, a 9-hole private course and 18 holes on the premises of Warren Air Force Base.

Rich recreational opportunities abound for Cheyenne area residents. One popular outdoor destination is Curt Gowdy State Park, just 26 miles west of Cheyenne. The park provides a paradise for fishing, boating and hiking.



For skiers, deep powdered runs are never far from Cheyenne. The Medicine Bow National Forest, about 90 minutes west of Cheyenne, is home to the family-oriented Snowy Range Ski Area. Vail, Steamboat Springs and many other Colorado ski basins are within a few hours of Cheyenne. And the legendary Rocky Mountain National Park, a popular spot for cross country skiers, is just two scenic hours away. Its snowcapped peaks are visible from the outskirts of town.

International attractions like Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks and Devils Tower National Monument are a day’s drive or less.

Laramie County Fair and RodeoAugust

Farmer’s MarketAugust through September
Fresh produce of all varieties – homegrown and ripe for the picking. Come explore the Downtown Farmer’s Market at the City Center Parking Lot, located between Carey and Pioneer Avenue on 16th Street every Saturday during the months of August and September from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Frontier Mall with over 80 stores and 500,000 square feet, has such well-known anchor stores as Dillards, Sears and J.C. Penneys.

Downtown Cheyenne offers a wide variety of shopping opportunities with more than 75 shops and galleries, and there are a number of shopping centers scattered throughout the community.
